Winter Musky Fishing Report

Winter musky fishing is off to a hot start here in Virginia, with both the New River and James River fishing well for us and our clients. We’ve been guiding both rivers with varied approaches. The James River is still very low and clear with these drought conditions, so intermediate lines and flies in the 7-9” range have been more of the norm. The New River started out November still very green but with lower flows, which is a great combo. As it has cleared up significantly going into December we’ve also been using very natural flies in the 8-9” range. This winter is shaping up to be a good one, with lots of numbers and some size coming to the net for clients on the fly rod. We’ve still got open dates from December through the end of February if you’re looking to chase musky on the fly!
