Pre-Spawn Smallmouth Fishing in Virginia

We’re almost there. Pre-spawn Smallmouth Bass fishing is notoriously the time of the year when you can realistically cash in on the larger fish in the system. It’s not uncommon to land a few fish in the upper teens or exceed 20” in a day fishing in March and April.

The James River and New River both boast the ability for clients to see not only size but numbers in a guided day with us. We spend a lot of time on the New River during this time, but we can certainly accommodate anglers located closer to the upper James River.

We are typically utilizing intermediate and sinking lines during this time. Larger streamers, imitating minnows, are on the menu for the day. This time of year is a streamer angler’s dream, making for some incredible visual eats.

If you are interested in getting out to target Virginia’s larger Smallmouth Bass, we’d recommend booking soon, as dates are filling fast!
